FOOD CENTRES, HAWKER MARKETS, & WET MARKETS
31 July 2020 | There’s hawker markets, wet markets, and food centres. Hawker markets sell goods and services. Wet markets sell fresh produce, fruits, meats, and seafood. Food centres have food stalls for serving different types of cuisines.
Since moving to Singapore, we’ve slowly become patrons of the various markets. Zion food centre has our favourite dumplings. The food centre at Sky Terrace has a favourite prata and egg prata (which recently closed) and our favourite Indonesian food. And for the first six months we fell in love with the beer babe and Thai food over at Bukit Merah food centre.
Though we don’t get any of the meats and vegetables at the wet markets (yet), we have been getting pineapple, mangoes, and papayas at the Red Hill wet market every few weeks.
And occasionally we’ll get some bits and bobs like razors or batteries at the Red Hill hawker market at super cheap prices. And best of all, we’ve found a barber who gives haircuts in 2 minutes for S$8 in Red Hill.
So if you want to live cheap and eat cheap, you can do so by living like a Singaporean and going to the markets and food centres.
